The island is part of the Cognac region of France, with many local blends available; along with the local speciality called “Pineau des Charente” - a fortified wine blended from grape juice and Cognac.

la cotiniere

La Cotiniere - a small fishing village to the north - and Dolus - to the east are the nearest towns in the vicinity of which are supermarkets along with bars and restaurants.

La Cotiniere is an active fishing town being the premier port for shrimps. Overlooking the busy harbour is a small but varied fish market selling
not only fish but mussels and oysters - the other specialities of the island.

The main town on the island - St Pierre - is inland to the north and is a 10-minute drive away, providing a more varied range of shops and a busy weekly market. At the southern end of the island is the town of Le Chateau which has an excellent weekly market as well as an impressive ruined castle called “The Citadel”
